This article questions the aspects of the governance structure of the La Plata and Ganges
Brahmaputra Basins that influence the capacity for cooperation between riparian countries
in the face of environmental crisis challenges. We chose these basins based on geopolitical
relevance and critical climate vulnerability criteria. Through bibliographic analysis of the
hydropolitical and governance structures of the basins, the study allowed us to conclude
that the countries of the La Plata basin opt for bilateral and multilateral agreements. In
contrast, GB basin countries opt for bilateral, reflecting concern with their sovereignties,
and there is little forecast for these mechanisms to address the environmental crisis.
