The relationship between Latin America and the liberal international order remains
underexplored. Through the lens of liberal democracy, one of the most important
elements of the international order, it is understood that since the 19th century, the
region has emulated political liberalism and created strategies for its dissemination
and contestation. This dynamic occurs both domestically and collectively within
regional organizations. Understanding the historical and contemporary articulation
of Latin America with political liberalism provides insight into the various forces
currently acting on the liberal order, shedding light on the different actors and
processes contributing to its multiple crises.
