The article discusses the probable risks to democracies in the process of formulating and
expressing political preferences in contemporary times, in particular, the impact that the
media has on social and political relations. From a case study that follows the temporal
cut of the electoral process of the United States of 2016, the research is structured in seven
sections, the first two discuss conceptual issues of civic conscience, the third the role of
the media and the others deal with the case study.
